3 Tips for Cleaning Shag Rugs

When it comes to rug cleaning, Shag Rugs are probably the hardest type of rug to maintain and clean.

They are thick, heavy and usually quite large.

They can also be quite a pain to clean.

That being said, they can still be cleaned just like any other type of rug.

What is a shag rug?

It is a rug or carpet with a deep pile, giving it that shag appearance.

Believe it or not, the name actually comes from old english and is related to a beard.

In recent years it has seen a resurgence in popularity.

Costco, one of the largest retailers in the United States, carries shag rugs in a variety of sizes year round.

I personally own several shag rugs purchased from a San Diego Costco and I've been very pleased with them.

They look great and are super comfortable to walk on or even lay down on when I want to relax.

Shag rugs come in different types such as flokati, wool, leather, acrylic and synthetic.

Be very careful with acrylic rugs as they are highy flammable.

Tip #1 - Shake it!

Unlike most other rugs that can visibly look dirty, shag rugs will hide the dirt.

The key is to regularly take your shag rug outside and shake the dust off.

We recommend having someone assist you to really get the dirt and dust off.

You can also drape it over a railing or chair to wiggle and shake the dust off.

This tip works great with all rugs, but especially for thick shag rugs.

Tip #2 - Watch the Vacuum

Shag rugs should not be vacuumed like normal rugs.

In fact, normal vacuums may get damaged trying to vacuum a shag rug.

If you must you a vacuum, use an attachment that will vacuum in between the rows of the shag rug and also vacuum slowly so you can properly suck out all of the dust and dirt in the shag rug.

Tip # 3 - Take it to the Rug Cleaning Professionals

If all else fails, take it to a rug cleaning professional in your area.

Do not take it to a carpet cleaner or have a carpet cleaner come to your home.

A true rug cleaning professional will deep clean it to make sure all the dust and dirt is removed.
