6 Tips for Finding the Right Rug for your home

Rugs are often chosen as a floor covering based on how they look and feel, but did you know they also have a positive impact on the indoor air quality of your home and the longevity of your carpet?

Rugs are an important part of our home decor, especially in homes with a large percentage of hard flooring.

Rugs brighten up a room and give warmth and comfort for those who walk, sit and sometimes lie on the rugs. When placed on top of the carpet, they act to protect the carpet from traffic, spills and abrasive soils thus slowing down the wear process and protecting your carpet.

After all, it’s much easier to replace a rug than a whole house of carpet.

You may have heard that carpeted houses have better indoor air quality than houses with hard floors. This is because carpet acts like a filter, pulling airborne pollutants out of the air, trapping the pollutants until they are removed with vacuuming or professional carpet cleaning.

Naturally, rugs act like carpet in the house, acting as a filter for airborne pollutants.

So, if you’ve got family members with asthma or allergies and you have large areas of hard floors in your home, you should buy a few rugs.

Just be sure to vacuum them regularly, front and back and get a professional rug cleaning done on a regular basis.

Rugs are meant to last forever as long you take care of them.

Here are a few tips in finding a rug for your home:

1. Size

This is probably one of the most important things to consider as it can make or break the design for the room. Small rugs highlight small areas like the coffee table while large rugs work best in open areas such as a lounge room. Don’t fall into the trap of filling a whole room with a rug. The rug may “dominate” the room and you’re also likely to find it hard to maintain the rug.

2. Placement

Consider where the door is. Make sure that the rug can fit perfectly under the door to prevent the rug from wrinkling or flipping over every time you open the door.

3. Identify what aspect of the room you want to highlight

May it be the fireplace, the sofa or the TV. If you want the rug to accentuate a particular piece of furniture, you might want to choose a subtle pattern or colour. If you want the rug to be the focal point, choose a bold colour or patterns.

4.Colour

For a room full of different colours, choose a neutral colour for your rug. You can also choose an accent colour in the room and match it with the rug such as the wall colour.

5.Texture and style

There are textured or shaggy rugs than can bring softness in a room full of wood or metal items.

6. Carpet material

Wool rugs are made from natural fibres while synthetic rugs are manmade. Wool rugs are more expensive than synthetic ones. Wool rugs will tend to be more durable than synthetic rugs, but when it comes to cleaning, wool will need more time for cleaning and drying.
